With fervour piacere is my favourite Italian word. The delight, pleasing, and giving satisfaction warms every heart. Being agreeable is pleasing. Especially with a greeting with a piacere di conoscerti it is so delightful piacevole, cozy and heart warming in order just to say that you find it pleasant to meet this person. An openness then supports your gaze. This gaze is genuine, sweet, gracious and open minded. There is not a tinge of suspicion, nor a pinch of rejection, but unconditional acceptance of the other. In music one uses a piacere, an "as you please" which grants the musician the freedom to execute a piece of music to his own discretion. And how courteous can a per piacere or "alstublieft" or “please” be. It is like an embrace with an elegant kiss to boot. Also the somewhat more formal synonym per cortesia is very beautiful. It refers obviously to the court and to the trovatori, the troubadours, who sang the courtly love at noble courts. With them I feel, till today, a strong kindred bond. Yet, if I must make a choice, it must after all still be per piacere. ( Vertaling Annmarie Sauer)
